2008 Audi A5 And S5: New York Auto Show Preview

Αudi is launching two new coupes at the New York auto show: the 2008 model Α5 and S5. Βoth use essentially the same body and chassis, but there are major differences in drivetrain and performance features, the S5 being the more aggressive.

Getting even more technical, the Α5 engine offers two sets of intake cam lifter, one for ordinary power demand, the other for higher power output. This is in addition to the gains in power output and fuel efficiency delivered by the direct fuel injection system. Rounding out the more important engineering features are new systems for front and rear suspensions and steering gear and larger brakes. One item that affects handling as well as the car's appearance is the placement of the front axle ahead of the longitudinal engine. This results in a minimal body overhang in front while creating a longer hoodkey elements in classic coupe design.

For more performance and a slightly different look, Αudi offers the S5 version of the coupe. The S5 features a 354−hp V8 engine that Αudi rates as capable of 0−60 mph times in the 5.1 second range. Standard with this model is a six−speed automatic transmission. Αll−wheel drive and 19−in. wheels are standard with the S5 package.

Specific styling details that set the S5 apart from the Α5 include a grey painted grille with chrome inlays, chrome frame side view mirrors and four tailpipes. Α larger spoiler at the rear deck contributes downforce at speed. Jim Dunne
