Front Front to Back - House Beautiful UK

The front of the home didn't seem the right place for it and, as we were able to renovate the whole home before we moved in, it was the perfect opportunity to make major changes to the layout. We thought about knocking a wall down to make it bigger, but after a lot of thought we decided to create a new kitchen at the back of the home extending an L−shaped living/dining room to create a larger, all−purpose space.

Yes. We used an architect to help us come up with a design for the extension with a pitched roof over the kitchen area. Αn external wall was knocked down and propped until a huge steel support beam was put in, allowing us to create one large room. This area was then sealed off while the extension walls were built. We installed a full−length window and double doors onto the garden, so we could enjoy the view and move easily between indoors and out.

I love baking so wanted two ovens, a large work surface and lots of storage space to hide the cookware. We didn't want it to look utilitarian or cluttered so we decided to have all the appliances in one section and open shelves instead of wall units. Α friend of ours, a cabinetmaker, put in the carcasses and we chose matt white doors so we can change the wall colour in the future. The quartz worktop was cut and polished on site.

How long did it take? The building work started the day after Evie's birthday in March and we had the floor down just in time for Thomas's birthday two months later. We held his party in the empty space it felt like a village hall! It then took a further two months to fit the kitchen units and finish decorating.

Αs an artist I often paint pictures to work with a specific colour scheme. Two of my paintings were the starting point for the blue and white theme in the kitchen area and then I added purple accent colours to identify the living and dining areas. I wanted a white background so I could create interest with accessories, which can be changed easily when we're ready for a different look.
