Transforming a Basement into a Family-friendly Colorful Entertainment Room

Debbie Wiener of Design Solutions – a Freshouse reader that’s also an accomplished designer with a successful book, another on the way, and a soon to premier furniture line wanted to share with us a makeover story of a traditional living room into something both beautiful and functional. Her focus isn’t on creating showroom houses instead its on creating designs for real living. Such is the case here. Debbie took a basement family room and made it into a family−friendly colorful entertainment room that encapsulates her design ethos: fun, inviting, and best of camouflage for all of life’s messes. She installed a dark chocolate rug to cover up the dirt of two teenage boys, had a Warhol−esque family portrait commissioned and used a sofa from her own Slobproof! with Crypton furniture line that’s stain−repellant and guaranteed long−lasting. With beautiful collectibles put into a glass display case, she was able to show them off the heirloom pieces without worrying that the family’s children would destroy them. Take a look at the before and after pictures of this project and tell us what do you think about the final result.

I always hear that renovating a basement won’t bring a very high return on your investment because house appraisers don’t consider subterranean rooms “living” square footage, but this is a HUGE improvement. If nothing else, it will be a cozy retreat for the whole family.

love it! Βut I’d like to see a picture from the same location as the original. You can tell by the ceiling that the 2nd is a little closer. What’d she do with the space on the right?
